  1. of course. this is how they make their money.

  2. Yes, unless you use a machine that will allow you to exchange your coins for an e-certificate to one of several places.  If you get an e-certificate your coin counting is free.  I presume that the online merchant pays coinstar a little kickback or something for the privilege so you get it for free.

Check www.coinstar.com to find a coinstar in your area that gives e-certificates and you can see which ones are available.

I always get them to amazon.com because I shop from Amazon a lot anyway and you can get all kinds of stuff from them.  So for me, it's a convenient way to get rid of the coins without paying that 7%-8% on it.  I just add the money to my Amazon account till I'm ready to buy.

  3. There is a sign on the machine.

No one really wants to handle coins.  There are many reasons.  This company does not provide this service for free.

If you don't want to pay the fee, either don't save coins or get rolls from your bank and roll them yourself to exchange at your bank.  However, check with your bank to see if they will accept them and if there is a charge.

  4. Yes, it should say on the front of the machine.

I think the one I saw the other day took 7%.

Pay your change in to your bank account, then you will get to keep the whole amount.

  5. They have to pay for the electricity to operate the machine somehow.

I have an account with Capital One and they have a coin counter in the lobby.  It will give a slip of paper to take to the teller to cash.  It is free for accountholders.  I find this handy, especially for the kids.  It makes it easy for them to take their coins in for depositing.  Plus you don't hold up the line while waiting for the teller to count the coins.
