  1. It normally works when I use it. I usually take it at night so I'm not uncomfortable and coughing in my sleep. In the morning I'm good as new. Now, I eat Ricola drops whenever I feel a little itchy in the throat. That works well too.

Here, a website that explains a little more about cough syrup:

  2. Does not work for me nor would I use something with so many unpronounceable ingredients.  3 years ago I have switched over to a Echinacea/Goldenseal Blend. At the first signs of a cold or sore throat I take 2 capsules 2-3 times a day.

  3. No, use natural honey instead.

  4. Most cough medicines are antihistamines. This means that you usually take it before going to bed for the night and it can help to reduce cold symptoms and can help you to sleep through the night and not have terrible fits of dry coughing, sneezing, etc. So in this way yes they work but usually they don't work any better than over the counter prescriptions, this of course being because they are prescribed by a doctor and can usually help to get rid of a cold within 1-2 weeks. Cold medicine is available without a prescription so they are general and don't really go deep into your bloodstream like ibuprofen will.
