  1. Not really, it depends on the situation. A lot of times a placebo can help with certain things but for the most part I would have to say no.

  2. Yes, I once chopped off my head, did a little meditation and voila!!! I now have my head back, better than ever!

    Come on dude, be serious.

  3. Hello

Yes it can be of great help. It increases you ability to be positive, creative & to take control.

It increases your ability to visualise & there fore to make powerful changes.

    Sadhara

  4. This is meditation with breathing techniques to stimulate the body to carry out healing naturally. Do it and reap the benefit and help someone else.

You need to help your body to build up your immune system. The breathing exercises - pranayam is a holistic approach creating extra oxygen supply in the body and will slowly help with the health problem.Do the pranayam to see the benefits.Build up your timing slowly and after two weeks at the suggested duration you will start to notice benefits.

Bhastrika - Take a long deep breath into the lungs(chest not tummy) via the nose and then completely breathe out through the nose.Duration upto 5 minutes.

Kapalbhati -(Do it before eating) Push air forcefully out through the nose about once per second. Stomach will itself go in(contract in). The breathing in(through the nose) will happen automatically. Establish a rhythm and do for upto 30 minutes twice a day.(Max 60 min/day) Not for pregnant women. Seriously ill people do it gently.

Anulom Vilom - Close your right nostril with thumb and deep breath-in through left nostril

then – close left nostril with two fingers and breath-out through right nostril

then -keeping the left nostril closed  deep breath-in through right nostril

then - close your right nostril with thumb and breath-out through left nostril.

This is one cycle of anulom vilom.

Repeat this cycle for 20 to 30  minutes twice a day(maximum 60 minutes in one day).

You can do this before breakfast/lunch/dinner or before bedtime or in bed.Remember to take deep long breaths into the lungs. You can do this while sitting on floor or chair or lying in bed.

Bhramri Pranayam -Close eyes. Close ears with thumb, index finger on forehead, and rest three fingers on base of nose touching eyes. Breathe in through nose. And now breathe out through nose while humming like a bee.

    Duration : 5 to 10 times

    ----

Only by doing you will benefit and will feel good that you can do something to help the body.Copy and print this to master the technique. This is  simplified pranayam for everyone and you do not have to go to classes to learn. This is for life unlike short term classes where you do it in the class then stop when classes are over.

  5. Yes, I believe that we do have the power to heal ourselves in with certain ailments!

  6. No...with a qualifier.

Meditation is a form of relaxation.  Many vague symptoms are related to stress and anxiety.  So if you have psychosomatic illness, then there may well be a role for meditation, or some other form of relaxation (fishing, knitting, reading a good book, writing brilliant answers on Y!A)

Meditation has no effect on actual diseases like diabetes, lupus, cancer, atherosclerosis, polycystic kidneys, COPD......you get the point.

There is no harm in meditation.  If it makes you feel more relaxed and in touch with yourself...go for it.  Don't substitute it for real treatments of real illnesses.

  7. If you want to use Chinese medical theory's model, it can somewhat improve your system (especially for stress related conditions like highblood pressure)..more than say placebo, but if you specifically wanted to do a mind body practice to heal the body, they would advise either a medical chi gung form or tai chin (both of which are contingent upon having a good teacher).

Putting it differently, meditation often greatly improves people's abilty to do tai chi/chi gung, but doesn't do very much for the body.

On the other hand though, I have seen people get amazing results for health ailments (better than what the western medical system could provide) utilizing those 2 approaches.

In a lot of ways its a semantics thing, since most people don't know "what" meditation is (other than that it's popular and good to do), so depending on what method you use, the results are totally different (and in some schools of thought tai chi and chi gung are meditation etc.).  On the surface, all reduce stress, but if you tie an authentic tradition into a direct body practice, some pretty amazing results can occur.

*Although I think it's mostly useless clinically, I have seen meditation sometimes help for cancer than was psychologically caused.

  8. Sure, why not? The mind is very powerful.  Monks are known to be able to stop their hearts during meditation. Why can't you heal an ailment?

The body wants to be in optimal health.  Just as a person can convince himself of being ill and then physically show signs of illness, the opposite is certainly true.

When in meditation, the brain waves slow to the Theta state. Here you're able to tap into your subconscious mind more easily without interference from your conscious mind.

Imagine yourself completely healed and well. Keep up that attitude even when you're not meditating.

  9. mental ailments or physical ailments? i bet you physical, in which i would answer no. But!!! if you are a smoker and want to stop smoking, meditation can help if you belive and are dedicated, whichi in the long run will heal your future ailments.
