I'd prefer answers from people with degrees in nutrition science, doctors, bio majors, biochem majors and the like.. I want to know if diet soda can actually work against weight loss programs because of spikes in insulin (which inhibits fat burn)

  1. Diet sodas contain no sugar, and are therefore safe for a diabetic to drink.

There is some new evidence, though, that CAFFEINE can cause a spike in blood sugar (and thus a spike in insulin).

Caffeine in general causes the body to "work" harder -- that's why people get jittery.  But you body needs more sugar to work harder, so you get a "liver dump", which increased the blood sugar, which would tend to increased the insulin -- especially in a normal person.

However, one or two diet colas a day generally doesn't hurt you in any way.

  2. Okay, so i don't have a degree in any of those but I've been diabetic for 14 years now, and i actively research nutrition.  Diet soda, has no sugar in it.  sugar raises blood sugar levels, and insulin stabilizes the high levels.  Sugar and insulin are constantly being released in the body, by the liver, and by the pancreas.

Now, in the kevin trudeau book, he said that diet soda can be detrimental to your diet paln, for a couple of reasons.  Diet soda is addicting because of aspartame is in it.  he also said that those who have switched from diet to regular actually have lost weight right away.  I don't have any evidence of that though.  But i do know this, i stopped drinking all soda and replaced it with water.  i'm all the happier for it, and i have a six pack.

  3. Diet soda if it contains NO SUGAR or fruictose should not affect the insulin in any way.
