  1.      Only if you want to hear the sounds from your surround sound system when you're watching TV channel. Sony 920 receiver supports audio via HDMI.

  2. If you expect to receive 1080p signals from either your satellite dish, BlueRay, or PS/3, you need an HDMI connection. You can connect the satellite box and the disc player directly to the TV if it has enough HDMI inputs, bypassing the receiver. You just won't be able to use he receiver's remote as a universal remote.

  3. For starters, hdmi is just DVI-D + sound. An adapter of somesort will not change the quality. You may need an HD Fury if your tv's authorization key is revoked.

To answer your first question, yes, dish network makes several HD receivers.

    ViP 722, ViP 612, ViP 211, ViP 222

Do not buy the following receivers, ebay or elsewhere because they will not receive any HD channels.

    Dish 811, 921, 6000, 625, 621, or 622.

Those are dish's previous generation receivers. Dish has swapped all of those recievers out for free any anything on ebay consists of greedy con artists trying to make an extra buck.

These receivers will receive 8-PSK Turbo broadcasts, but they will not display any broadcast that is MPEG-4.

Dish moved all their HD broadcasts from MPEG2 to MPEG4 recently (8\1) to save space as they increase video resolution.

They swapped out all customers with old receivers beforehand. Some of those customers and installers are total cheats as you can see from ebay listings.

You do NOT need an HDMI connection to receive 1080p broadcasts. VGA and DVI wi.l both carry 1080p video resolutions and so will RGBHV and HD SDI.

I completely do not understand the following sentence.

    bravia xbr4 sony 920....what is this ?

Is it the TV or the reciever

    An xbr4 is a tv.

The 920 is an av reciever.

By the way, Sony is a poor choice in electronics, it really shows when someone is total clueless as to what quality electronics look like.

  4. "By the way, Sony is a poor choice in electronics, "

    Thats a bit harsh Dash.

I agree with most of what Dash says. I use HDMI from my Dish 722, but I go straight to the TV.

Sony XBR4 is a highly respected line of LCD televisions. Several good magazines (Home Theater, The Perfect Vision) have put them on their Editors choice or Best of The Year lists.  So this is a good choice.

But I would not buy Sony speakers, subwoofers or any receiver except for the "ES" series from Sony.

In Pioneer, I would only buy an "Elite" receiver.

In Yamaha, I would only buy the RX-V receivers.

The Dish 722 receiver is also a good choice. I have both TimeWarner HD service and just upgraded to this Dish receiver for the Olympics and the picture quality seems outstanding on both.  I cannot tell which of the two sources I am looking at - they are both great. So this is also a good choice.

  5. Dish's HD receivers support HDMI.  I just have my receiver directly connected to the TV.  The other devices in my living room share a HDMI switch.  Surround sound is hooked up separately - I don't use the receiver as my switch because it doesn't have enough HDMI inputs (nothing does.)

Also, Dash is wrong.  While component video is capable of carrying a 1080p signal, almost all TVs that support HDMI, will ONLY do 1080p via HDMI - they limit component video and VGA to 1080i.

None of this really matters though.  The only thing from Dish that is in 1080p is their on-demand movies, which I doubt are actually at "blu-ray grade" because of the bandwidth that would be required to actually transmit such a signal.  Everything on Dish (and all satellite, cable, and digital channels for that matter) is highly compressed anyways, so you lose some detail right there.  Even the HD stations themselves are only broadcasting in 720p with one or two exceptions that are in 1080i.

  6. as long as you get an HD satellite receiver, then yes, it has 1 HDMI output.
