Question:

Does doing machine embroidery make anyone nervous?

I don't understand why it makes me so uncomfortable. Maybe it is not being in control? Maybe it is the fact that I messed up my machine and it cost 80 bucks to get it fixed? Maybe machine embroidery is not my thing, yet I am drawn to do it... Maybe I am just so new at it and need to get used to it?

Hoping for people with similar thoughts or notions to answer.

  1. at frist i was nervous using a new machine but now i love it. don't give up. if you get fustrated with it that's the time you need to step away and come back later. try to sew out samples on things on cheap fabrics frist, that way you know that you will like them ect...also you might want to go online and look for someone who offers classes in your area. i did and learned a lot from other quilters and embroideryers. you might also want to check out books, get freebees online, if you time there might even be  chat room/e-group that you can sign up with.

  2. I have had my machine since 2001 and had never tried the embroidery. I do alot of quilting. Mine was in the shop for over a month and i went through withdrawls. It cost me 500. When i got it back i decided i was going to embroidery and I have not stopped. I love it. It does make me a little antsy because Im not doing anything. Just watching but im getting used to that. Im making my first quilt with all the squares being embroidered. Next is baby bibs. I just found out Im going to be a grandma! I will work on more than one project at a time so if i get bored with just watching my machine i can go back to quilting on it. Hang in there you will love it

  3. Take classes. I have taken several classes on embroidery, hooping, thread, stabilizers. I have gone to sewing conventions to take classes and mingle with other sewers. I took classes from the sewing machine dealer on my machine and it's embroidery unit.

The more I learned, the more embroidery I did, the more I did, the better I got at it.

I always sew out a new design on a scrap piece of fabric first.  Keep your samples, when you go to sew out the design on a garment you will know how large it is and how the colors change.

  4. Hi, I've turned my home machine into a business check out this site www.artisticthreadworks.com they are a great source of info and you can get good designs they offer some freebies, I trust their designs  that's where I learned everything about embroidery. The cost is well worth it. The only way to get over the "fear" is to do it. Get some felt squares you don't have to have stabilizer (although it helps). Make sure you get good quality designs, if they're not digitized right they don't sew right (garbage in - garbage out). Make sure you read your instruction manual and follow it step by step. I teach sewing and have found that most machine issues are operator issues not mechanical. It is fun so don't let it stress you out, just remember if to walk away for awhile if you get frustrated and come back later. If you let it frustrate you it won't be fun and that's what it's all about. You will get addicted once you get started. If I be of help please let me know
