Does drafting behind an 18-wheeler actually save gas? How close behind would you have to be?

Please no "don't do that, it's dangerous, that's stupid" answers. I'm asking because I'm curious, not because I plan to do it.

  1. Well, just yesterday I saw the same thing on "Brainacs" and in that they actually proved that you save gas if you draft behind a big vehicle.

The experiment was conducted at various distances and the closeness to the bigger vehicle (the one in front) has significant impacts on fuel consumption. They had provided concrete figures (which I obviously dont remember since I wasn't aware that I would be answering this on Yahoo!).

But do check it on Brainacs, they would have it somewhere on their records.

    Cheers.

  2. Yes it does. See the episode of "Mythbusters". Even within a few car lengths saves on fuel. You dont need to be right on the trucks bumper.

  3. if you try you might find your self in the hearafter (well at

    you wont be driving)

or you could find your car suddendly became a compact

    car

  4. Yes.  Probably within a car length or so.

  5. Basically, yes.  I know people who travel with mopeds and such on the highway that do it.  I don't think its that dangerous personally.

  6. They did it on "Mythbusters". I believe 2 to 4 inches was the best for drafting. Even they didn't want to do that! Get a car that runs on natural gas instead. I have 2 and they're great. 85 cents a gallon, no kidding.

  7. yes, proven on mythbusters that it does really save gas but very dangerous to do. dont do it b/c u only end up saving a few bucks and u're risking ur life.

  8. you have to be within a few feet of a big trailer to be in its draft. ive actually done it and seen my rpm's drop when i was in the just right position
