Does dropping out of community college effect my eligibility for financial aid in the future at other schools?

I attended a community college for less than one semester and abruptly dropped out due to other obligations. I had received full financial aid for the semester and received a letter of academic probation shortly after the semester ended. I wasn't and am not planning on returning to this school but does the fact I didn't complete the semester and was put on academic probation affect my eligibility for financial aid in the future?

  1. No. Because I did something similar and the stafford loan I had also went into default status. I just paid the stafford loan in full to get government assistance again. I qualified for a Pell Grant, Sub and UnSub stafford loans and a scholarship. :)

  2. No, being on academic probation at one school will not affect you at the school you are transferring to in applying for financial aid.

If you are required to return any funding you received in a refund for financial aid that may affect you if the refund consisted of federal funds issued in the refund.  Otherwise you have nothing to worry about.

Talk to your financial aid office and business office to find out what percentage of federal funding you are required to return (if any).

  3. It depends on how far into the semester you dropped out.  If you dropped out too soon, you could owe that Pell grant back.  Then definitely it would effect you getting aid in the future at other schools.  It can be taken care of as the other person indicated.  Just pay the portion back that you owe and you'll be eligible for aid again.  This won't help your GPA however, which also requires you to maintain a minimum GPA to keep your fin aid.
