Question:

Does eating this many baby carrots on a daily basis make your skin orange?

I'm trying to eat healthier and lose some excess weight. So I'm snacking on carrots rather than reaching for junk food. I'd eat those individual sized bags of baby carrots that would yield about 1 1/2 cups everyday. I'm just wondering is the beta carotene in that much amount of carrots enough to turn my skin orange? Or the Vitamin A enough to hurt me?

  1. You should understand the difference between beta carotene and vitamin A. The former is harmless even in large quantities. The latter is toxic when you consume too much. Carrots contain only beta carotene (like all plants) and the body can shut off its conversion to vitamin A if necessary. If you eat an animal source of direct vitamin A, your body cannot regulate the excess.

So don't worry. Your skin might turn orange but it won't harm you. Your body can store gigantic amounts of carotenes under the skin.

  2. You would have to eat several pounds of carrots.

  3. You would have to eat a h**l of a lot of baby carrots to turn orange.  You're fine.  Don't worry...If you were eating 20 lbs a day you might have to worry, but not 1.5 cups.

  4. eating carrots doesnt turn your skin orange. carrots turn yours skin yellow and tomatoes can turn your skin red but  neither (unless combined as seen in a scrubs episode) will turn your skin orange. And you would need to eat carrots for every meal and probably only drink carrot juice or something haha.

  5. i think u should be fine and ur hair should be fine too the carrotts will make ur hair silky and i dont think u should turn orange but u shouldnt eat too many carrotts i would just eat 1 cup a day u can live with out the other 1/2

  6. You're probably fine.  Where folks run into trouble is when they juice their carrots, hence ingesting alot more than you, and drink way too much.  That's usually where you find the skin discoloration.

  7. It's likely that that amount of carrots would not induce Carotenoderma.  Usually signs of the beginning stages are yellowish palms, fingernails, and soles.

If you see symptoms like your skin changing color...getting yellowish or orange, you can reduce your intake of beta-carotene in carrots and other foods and your skin will return to normal.

Interesting experiment where one woman went on an all carrot diet for 30 days: http://www.steelgirl.com/carrot.htm

  8. idk but one of my teachers once told me her friend turned like a tan orange from drinkin to much carrot juice while doin a carrot juice diet so idk

  9. Not at all.  I eat at least a pound of them every day, and my skin is the same pinky beige it has always been.

  10. Um I eat that much carrots or more... and trust me, I am not orange... I am pale. A fruit or vegetable will not turn you the color of it if you eat alot of it. I also eat a ton of watermelon and red grapes, and I'm not purple or pink... so I hope I helped...

  11. I've eaten enough carrots to turn my big toes orange.  Don't know how much it was, I was younger.

In babies when they eat a lot of squash or orange beta carotene-y veggies their skin will have an orangish cast to it.

    I don't think its dangerous.

I believe its Vitamin C, and I don't think you can eat enough to harm you.  I believe you'll pee out what you won't need.
