I think it isn't economic progress that brings out the worst in people, but competition. But competition also brings economic progress.

Perhaps you are correct, if you're talking about completely deregulated industrial aged business, when there were monopolies, no rules, abuse of workers, and rampant crime (but there was certainly economic progress).
