Does evaporative cooling of water help the efficiency of air conditioners?

  1. In a very large installation, evaporative cooling by water is used in cooling towers.  That improves the efficiency of cooling by a heat pump or vapor cycle chiller.  But it's not used in most AC applications because the gain in efficiency doesn't justify the added cost, maintenance, and complexity.
