    some are called states, some are provinces, or parishes, or other such divisions.

    you can go to this site, and find out what each country's divisions are called (state, province, etc) and the names of those divisions.

    Some countries are divided into different regions though.

    Countries such as England have 'Counties'.

    Countries such as France have 'Departments'.

    Countries such as Canada have 'Provinces'.

    It just so happens that America's were called 'States'.

  8. not necessarily states but most countries have provinces or shires or parishes that are reminiscent of states. so i guess the answer to your question is no.
