I found a large online list of website hosting companies. http://www.findwebsitehost.com Locating a local webhosting company might have it's advantages since you can visit their facility if needed.

Unless its a free-site-host like bravenet or freewebs, then yes. If they have their own URL like Yahoo.co.uk then there's a good chance they paid for it, I think you can get .net free though (or you could at one point)

If the URL is like... myspace.com/xxxxx or freewebs.xxxxxxxx.com or something like that, its generally a free site

Anyone who is serious about the web does PAY for domain and hosting.

All other free domains, free host and so on are for kids and amateurs.

Having a "free site" will KILL anything you try to do, blog, forums, personal pages and so on: you'll get your friends and familly, that's all.

Nobody cares about free sites: they are just trials of beginners, kids playing around, self-ego trips or exhibitionism... How sad!
