Question:

Does everyone's family have some form of "dysfunction?" ?

I know that in my family - that is, the family I was born into, there were some mild and moderate forms of dysfunction. The pop psychology says that there are no "Leave it to Beaver" families anymore. But what are the kinds of dysfunctions that most families have had? Again, not you as parents as much so, as what your own parents siblings, and extended families.

Alcoholism? Other substance abuse? Infidelity? Depression? Gambling? Anxiety? Verbal abuse? Physical abuse? Molestation?

As we usually keep our family problems to ourselves. it is helpful to know that other families have coped or are coping with problems too.

Thanks!

  1. All of the above sounds all too familiar, in one form or another.  Morals seem strongly lacking in today's world.  Where are the role models?

  2. yea, every family has disfuctions..nobody is perfect.

  3. FYI- there was NEVER any leave it beaver families, remember it was only a show. ALL families have their issues:

Mine: All of the above and still dealing with them everyday.

  4. Yes everyone's families' have some level of dysfunction.  Leave it to Beaver is a fictional show.

  5. If every family were perfect . the social workers and the Dr. Phil's would be out of work. And my family is no different, we have all kind if problems, It just depends on how each family copes with it.

  6. Let me think...

My dad was a narcissist, my mother a control freak.

My 1st step dad would spend too much money on things.

My 2nd step dad abused painkillers.

My dad's mother married 7 times, twice to the same man. Chain smoked and lived for the drama in making negative things her focal point.

My Grandfather is a Racist and so are 3 uncles.

My dad's brother uses Meth. and is missing most of his teeth.

One of my uncle's sons is in prison for shaking a baby.

    The other son is depressed.

    The aunt is passive.

    Um.. yep.. I'd say so.

  7. Yes, both alcoholism and molestation were in my family. I'd say about ten percent of families have the leave it to beaver situation going on.

  8. h**l we have a little bit of all of it in my family. alcoholics, cheating, beating, verbal, and even suspected molestation on my dads side. the whole leave it to beaver thing is just a hope and a dream from way back, it has never been that way. all you can do is try to learn from their mistakes and try to make things better for your own family.

  9. yeah I believe so. But I also believe that some families are more dysfunctional than others. I have a bit of dysfunction in mine but all in all we mange to keep it together with out going completely off our rocker. SO yes I do believe that

  10. Yes, i think we all have dealt w/some sort of dysfunction.  I put up w/alot of verbal and mental abuse.  but I wonder what my kids will say about me?  After all, we are only human and no one is perfect.

  11. Alcoholism, depression, anxiety, Verbal abuse, and some other stuff. As long as we are human we will continue to make mistakes. So if we are not perfect the perfect family does not exist. The best thing you can do is be understanding of your family members weakness and help them see there strengths.
