Does feeding black oil sunflower seeds really help a horse's coat?

I've been doing some research on things to help a horse's coat color, and to make it shinier, and many people have said BOSS work. Are there any harmful side affects? And how much should you feed?

We've fed BOSS to horses on and off through the years, and with the proper nutrition in place first, yes it can help.  We don't feed them anymore due to cost going up, and knowing of a horse that has had them implicated in an impaction colic -- not sure if the BOSS was really the reason for the colic, but I prefer not to take the chance.

I used Sunflower Seed Oil for my horses coat a month leading up to a sale. Feed only a lid full every meal and within a few weeks you should be able to see the difference. No from what I know of it is not harmful. If your horse has a "super dull" coat I would make sure its not just a lack of nutrients first just to be safe.

ADD: Sunflower oil, as far as I have seen, has no added side effects at all. And does not induce hyperness.

i have never tried it on my horse. i have a very dark palomino quarter hose gelding that i show competitively, and i prefer corn oil over any other product that is supposed to put a shine on the coat. it is pretty cheap and can be picked up in most any grocery store. there are no side effects, and it doesnt have any thing that will made your horse hyper. hope i helped =]
