Question:

Does first month soreness happen each time you start breastfeeding or only the very first time (first baby)?

(I asked this before, but didn't get enough answers)

If you have problems (inverted nipples, sore/cracked/bleeding, mastitis, etc) when you start nursing your first baby, can it happen again when you start nursing subsequent babies?

Do inverted nipples return to their inverted condition when you stop breastfeeding your first? (which means they have to be pulled out again next time)

I had quite a lot of problem when I start nursing my first (not mastitis, but flat nipples, soreness, and bleeding) but it did get better after about 3-4 weeks, and after 9 months, I'm still going on, yay!

But now I'm wondering if the pain and problem will return when I have my second child.

How's your experience?

Thanks!

  1. Now that you know more about breastfeeding and what to do the next will be easier. I didn't say perfect - I just said easier. This time around you will know how to hold the baby and how to latch him on. You may have to exvert your nipples again. Although if you have been taught the "sandwhich" technique then you may not have to do anything to your nipples. You may still experience a small amount of tenderness on your nipples with the next baby but the skin will be a lot tougher from your first baby that it wont feel as bad. Each infant is different with breastfeeding so it wont be exactly the same.

  2. I don't know, but after the problems that I had with my first, I did everything I could to make sure I didn't have to go through again.  I learned about natural childbirth because I believe that the epidural and demerol I was given interfered with my baby's instincts.  I had a totally natural birth with my second, and even though the neonatologist in charge that day took my baby away and wouldn't give her back, she still nursed like a champ.

I was still sore, but I knew that shorter, more frequent nursing sessions would help with that.

That's my story.  I hope it somehow helps.

  3. With my first baby, I ended up with very sore and bleeding nipples.  She gave me little blisters and it was very painful.  I just had another baby almost a month ago, and it did hurt for the first few days and he did end up giving me little blisters, but it wasn't nearly as bad as with my first.  It luckily only lasted for a couple of days.

Good luck and congrats on your second!!

  4. Sad to say, with each baby!

  5. I had no probs feeding my first but a bit sore with my second so I guess it could come back,  no feeling like it though - definitely worth keeping at it
