Yes, it absolutely does.  The decisions made by the governments of global superpowers (like America) have far-reaching global effects.  If we are geographically illiterate (and studies show that in general, we are) then those decisions will likely be made with misinformation and little consideration of the global community.  The earth is an intricate web of people, places, cultures, and ecosystems, and geography seeks to examine each of these in detail.  History often teaches us the "what" and the "when," and although these are both important to understand, events do not take place in a vacuum.  Rather, they occur in the realm of space and place, which is exactly what geography explores.

    With a working knowledge of geography, we can better understand the various cultures of the world and global affairs, and be more aware of how our decisions shape the global community.
