I got interested in geology at a fairly young age, 5 or 6. I am not an expert by any stretch of the imagination, it just fascinates me for some reason. The whole deal, from tiny pebbles to plate tectonics. Where the rock came from, how it was formed, how it has changed, and why.

My mom worked at YSI, the Youth Science Institute, in San Jose, CA. It was a really rich experience for a child. The director of the institute was somewhat of a renaissance man, with a lot of knowledge about a lot of things. I was exposed to it all, for many years. He taught me to rock climb at a very tender age, and I was pretty good at it. Geology is central to climbing, you better have some kind of idea what you are climbing on, if you want to live. Hence, my interest in geology. I have climbed it all. Sandstone, limestone, basalt, and even shale, but for a serious climber, granite is heaven. I like little pieces too. Quartz crystals, geodes, agates, jade, and all the other myriad forms of minerals. Why?

  1. geology is interest science, where you discover new, strange matter, if you like climbing, travel in desert you will enjoy , but some don't like  , its hard duty

  2. I didn't recognize that I really liked geology until I took the intro course my second year of college.  I had been interested in landforms, rivers, streams, sediments, and all sorts of physical processes of that nature but never knew until I took that course that all of these things were part of a real science.

A short time into that course I realized that this was what had interested me all of my life but I just didn't know it.  Suddenly all of those things I had seen made sense.  The enormity of time and the playing out of the story through the ages just added to my interests.  I had an epiphany.  This is where I belong, this is why I am here.  Been loving it ever since, thirty some years later and counting.

  3. I've been interested in Geology since I was a kid.   Studying the Earth is like studying God's handiwork as written on the face of the planet.  Almost like a religion I suppose.  I've been a professional geologist in the petroleum business for over 30 years...right now I'd love to switch jobs and teach basic Geologist courses at a junior college somewhere, but I still need the nearly obscene amounts of money being paid for experienced petroleum professionals these days.

  4. I have a degree in Anthropology so I love studying evolution. I am not working in that field, but it is interesting to me. Geology is used in Anthropology i.e. Archaeological digs. along with other fields of respectable science to validate the sound scientific theory of evolution.
