  1. Sure, we have 4th July. It's exactly between the 3rd and the 5 th July.

We don't celebrate American holidays as well as the Americans dont celebrate the German ones.

  2. Well yes they do we all have a 4th of July but I am not sure whether it is  of any significant for them.

  3. I think so, let me check my calendar.... Yup, it's there!

  4. Uh...duh!

But the difference is to them it's just any other day

    In America,it's Independence Day

  5. cavis is right, but we don't celebrate it the way Americans do on 4th of July. For most Germans, the 3rd of October (reunification day) is simply a day off work. There are official events, and special TV broadcasts remembering the opening of the Berlin wall, but that's about it.

The problem with our national holiday is: The Berlin wall actually came down on Nov 9th 1989. Unfortunately, Nov 9th 1938 was the so-called "Reichskristallnacht", the night in which the burning of the synagogues and attacks on Jewish shops took place under the Hitler regime. Now, making Nov 9th a national holiday would obviously have been a bad idea, so they took Oct 3rd instead, the day the reunification treaties were ratified in 1990. However, there's no real emotions connected to that.

But I think most Germans are doing fine without national holiday celebrations. We have fireworks on New Year's Eve, and that's good enough.

Now you might ask: What did we have BEFORE 1990? In West Germany, it was the 17th of June, also quite a sad day: On June 17th 1953, the workers' uprising in East Germany was put down by the Soviet Army. That day became a national rememberance day in the West the following year and was later known as the "day of German unity" ("Tag der deutschen Einheit").

So you see: Nothing to celebrate here.

  6. Yup, it's the fourth day in the month of July.

  7. The Day of German Unity  is a national holiday in Germany, celebrated on October 3, which commemorates the anniversary of German reunification in 1990.

  8. Yes Germany have Independence or National Day. They started it October 3 1990, so they celebrate every Oct 3 of the year.
