Does getting a job affect your monthly social security pensions?

My mom receives a social security pension each month and she forbids me to get a job in fear that the social security pension will lower or be taken away if I get a job. Is this true? She also says that my sister and I receive a monthly pension because of my dad, who's passed away. If I get a job, will that be taken as well?

  1. summon out

  2. Some Social Security benefits can be affected by outside income.  You don't say what kind of benefits your mother is receiving so it's not possible to give a totally accurate answer.  Depending upon what type of benefits she's receiving, those might be reduced if SHE has other outside income.  However YOUR income will not affect HER Social Security benefits.

It appears that you are receiving survivor's benefits and those are not affected by your income so if you get a job it won't have any affect on your benefits.

If your Mom is concerned about loss of benefits due to outside income she should visit her local Social Security office and ask.  They'll be happy to assist you both in determining what type of benefits you each are receiving and if any outside income by either of you will have any affect on those benefits.

  3. no - G W Bush removed that law. You mom may earn as much as she wants without loss of benefits

  4. You are receiving survivor benefits.  It is not possible that your benefits will be reduced because you earn money.

It is also not possible that your mother's benefits will be reduced because you earn money.

    What is possible is:

    1.  Your mother's benefits may be reduced if she earns money.  This depends on what type of benefits she is receiving and her age.  She needs to contact SSA for her specific situation.

    2.  Your benefits may be partially taxed if

"your wages plus 1/2 of your benefits"

    are greater than $25,000.

The same in 2.  is true of your mother, if she works.

But your working does not affect your mother's benefits, and her working does not affect your benefits.

  5. Her pension will not be affected as long as your income is not on her tax return.  I had survivors benefits to and my mom's widow's benefits weren't affected.  You don't mention if you are a minor or adult. I had a social security pension as a minor and when I got a job at 15 I only worked part time and needed that study time anyway.  Anyway as long as she isn't claiming you as her dependent on her tax return it wont be reduced.  If she gets married it will be reduced.  My sympathy for your family and I hoped I helped
