Question:

Does getting braces hurt a little?

I'm not scared, just wondering if it's painful when they tighten them. I don't know to be a little worried because my mom said when she got them it was excruciating when they tightened it. I don't know if she's lying or she's telling the truth, plus that was nearly 30 years ago. I'm guessing it's just uncomfortable, and your mouth is soar. Any help?

  1. Don't worry.  You will feel a little pressure when they tighten them, but no pain.  Your mouth will be sore though afterwards, because your teeth are getting moved around from the wires.  It will definitely not be excruciating though. I had braces and there was never a time where I felt much pain.  You could take some ibuprofen before you go to the orthodontist to ease soreness a bit.  Hope this helped. :]

  2. Getting them put on is relatively easy.  There may be the occasional pinchy feeling to the gum tissue if they fit molar bands in the back, but that goes away in a few minutes.

There will be pressure & for most they do get some discomfort when the braces are adjusted (aka 'tightened').  The teeth are moving through bone, so it's natural for there to be some discomfort.  The first week or so after they're placed will be the worst of it.  It will get easier with each visit.  Eat a softer diet or take Tylenol/Advil if they ache a lot.

The insides of the lips & cheeks will get rubbed kind of raw initially.  Warm salt water rinses will soothe & the ortho will show you how to use wax.  In time the tissues in your mouth will toughen up to the friction.  No worries.

Sounds like Mom maybe is playing it up.  Is her attitude toward the dentist bad in general?  Usually if people expect something to be bad, it will be.

Just go in with a good attitude, ask questions so you understand what's happening & why it needs to happen (do this throughout your treatment).  The more you understand & invest in this treatment the better the end result.

Be sure to keep them clean too!

    Good luck.

  3. yea they r gonna hurt

  4. Nowadays they don't really "tighten" braces. It goes more like this:

    1) You go to the orthodontist sit in the chair.

    2) They remove the wire. Snip the ends or get a whole new wire place it in.

    3) Put new rubber bands on and "BAM" your done.

Sometimes you need different things done but overall it's pretty easy.

The whole thing doesn't hurt but after you a bit sore. Your mother may have thought it was painful but now it's not so very bad. Getting your braces on the first time is a lot more sore. Just take some pain reliever.

  5. When you first get them put on they don't hurt but after about an hour they start to hurt. It will be sore for about 4 days maybe 5. When they tighten them the pain isn't as bad as when you're first getting used to them. But it will hurt a little bit. Just take advil and eat soft foods while your mouth is sore.

    Hope I helped=)

  6. The pain is about 75% better nowadays than back then!! At least that's what my ortho told me back in the early 90's so I'm sure it's even better now! If you're worried about being sore-just take 2 ibuprofen about 1 hour before the appointment-but usually if you are sore it's for a day or 2 and just remember beauty is pain! Just kidding-it's not really that bad!

  7. They will hurt like h**l when you get them on for the first time, definintely take 2 ibuprofens when you get them on, they will hurt approximately 3-5 days, give or take a day depending on how bad or good your teeth are, but getting them tightened really doesn't hurt that bad, not NEARLY as much as getting them on, but still take some pain-killers before getting them on.
