Does glasgow have as bad a reputation as i think?

i live in glasgow and i feel perfectly safe walking along the streets. yes, you can run into a group of neds (definition of ned: idiot/chav) and get into trouble but basically if you avoid joining a stupid gang or young team youll be ok, and use basic common sense. do people REALLY think glasgow's as bad as TV portrays it? like a knife crime program last night described glasgow as basically worse than anywhere in england, even though we're smaller.

and i was once talking to an english guy who came up to visit relatives in scotland, and his dad told him to 'roll up the windows and don't make eye contact' as they were going through glasgow city centre at mid day. i mean- what??

what's your opinion if you think of glasgow?

  1. I have lived in Glasgow all my life and have always felt perfectly safe wherever I have been. As you say, there are idiots (neds) who like to drink Buckfast and go looking for fights, but you get that in any large city in the UK - not just Glasgow. I think years ago it had a really bad reputation for gangsters carrying knives which has kind of stuck in peoples minds. I think Glasgow is a wonderful city with a lot to offer - that's my opinion of Glasgow!

  2. I live near glasgow like you

I hate the fact that everyone outside of scotland thinks we're all NEDs

I mean yeah there are NEDs but most of us aren't

you just need a bit of street sense to stay out of harms way

We're not any worse than america or england

  3. Glasgow's reputation outside the UK is finaly changing to reflect the true image of the city, a world class destination.

Its just the Scottish media that love to paint this image of Glasgow as a "tough" city and that east coast "city" as a wonderful little place where nothing bad every happens, ofcourse we all know both could be further from the truth.

  4. I went to Glasgow last year and thought it was a lovely city, I've been back since.

I think it's the same as anywhere else in that if you go looking for crime you'll find it, but if you stay safe it's lovely and has some great history behind it.

  5. Glasgow is the best city to be ! lived there for 4 years plus 1 year in london. really enjoyed living there nice people even the neds were friendly to me ! LOL

now im back to pakistan will visit glasgow again some day !

  6. I have been to Glasgow 100's of times and never once had any trouble just stay out of the schemes and you will be fine

  7. I live in Glasgow and feel perfectly safe walking through the city centre. Yes twe have Neds but only a fraction of people are Neds. I think that Tv definetly makes Glasgow look much worse than it actually is.

  8. Glasgow does have a world wide reputation for two things, Glasgow Rangers and Glasgow Celtic.  It gives the world the impression of a city divided against itself.

Scotland and the Scottish people are held in very high regard around the world - they are known as a folk who do not give up and don't have a word for surrender.

The Scottish people are also known for their high standard of education and their achievements in science and engineering and indeed their very own culture, which has spread far and wide around the world.

You must be positive when thinking of Glasgow - think of it's history, it's ship-building past and what it is today, a glorious city which has given the world more than it's share of the good things in life.

Being an old soldier, I have in my time met many Glaswegians - mostly they are forthright and say what they mean - which is fair, even if it is sometimes a bit, "see you Jimmy" etc.

It's all too easy to forget the greatness of Scotland - so, I want you to listen to this and weep.

You must understand that I as a Welshman, am entirely biased in favour of the Celts, who in my opinion can do no wrong.

A Cornish poetess once said, "You wait until us Celts gets organised, you'll see".  When, when, when?

    Meanwhile, enjoy this. . . . .it's all true!
