Yes, Google Maps Mobile uses data and is somewhat data intensive. You can easily go through 5MB of data using Google Maps Mobile.

Yes it will use data. I ran my GPS through Google Maps on my Tilt. Driving from the Vegas Strip to Centennial Hills (25 miles), I used about 10-20 MB. If you use the WIFI it wont cost you.
