Question:

Does grip strength affect how hard you can hit?

Obviously somebody with a grip like a dead fish is asking for broken fingers if they throw a punch. But I’m wondering if having a grip like a vice can really pack a wallop, or is grip strength irrelevant?

  1. A hard punch has the whole body in it. The forearm that gives one a strong grip is not as critical as larger muscle groups, but it can add a bit to the total force. The muscles in shoulders, back and chest are the main ones involved. Putting one's hips and legs behind the punch increases its force greatly.
