Does handedness determine writing direction or is the other way around?

Are most people in the world right-handed because most languages in the world are written left-to-right? Or is it the other way around? Or is there no relationship?

Also, how about the people from countries with right-to-left languages (eg. Arabic or Hebrew) - are they mostly left-handed? Surely being right-handed would be disadvantageous to them?

BONUS QUESTION!

Do you think that the increasing use of computers for writing tasks will produce a generation of "unhanded" people?

  3. That's an interesting thought,  but I concur with the answers above, but to the bonus question, i think that writing may become an art in the next couple hundred years, like calligraphy.

  4. Handedness is not an adaptation to language or technology. It's a by-product of the organization of our brains. Answerer two is correct in that people from anywhere tend to be right-handed.
