  1. any file or folder on drive would use space in byte sizes, kb/ mb/  gb, it would not take space on ram memory, unless other file search programs were preset to search at boot, you can check startup in menu, or run msconfig for such programs,

so whether you folder is on desktop or in my documents, the (drive space)/ memory will be used, not the ram,

you could run scandisk error checker, and then view drive with defragmenter to analyze only for what space is being used,

    ..

  2. every time you save something n your hard disk it decreases the capacity of the hard disk drive that is available for storage. It is much like a fridge: the more food you pile in, the less space is left for more stuff. Sooner or later you would want to move some of those pictures to dvd disks for cataloging and storage off the hard drive, to make space for additional uploads to your PC. Concider backing  up your wanted materials, before the system becomes full and unstable and you end up losing it all...

  3. Yes, every time your computer starts up, the more files you have on your desktop, the more time it will take to load. Try to move them to My Documents. Although once the computer is loaded, the amount of memory it takes up is minimal.
