Does having a southern accent make me sound dumb?

i'm not a redneck. except for saying "like" too much, i actually have pretty good grammar. but i want people to take me seriously. should i try to lose the accent?

keep the accent, it's charming.  southern educated folk are some of the finest and most sophisticated.  and the genteel spirit and manners are second to none.

"like" is a little more california valley.  drop that.  people think southerers are idiots because they watch jerry springer, maury or whatever.  lower class gauche citizens are in every culture.  and before i get slammed, it has nothing to do with money.  i have none and i'm a california surfer girl, but i wish i was a southern belle.  taste and class have nothing to do with the wallet.

Dumb ignorant northerners and westerners will say you sound dumb. They're just seizing an easy way to try to elevate themselves. Don't say "like" or "you know" and don't talk too fast, and you can sound as smart as you want to be.

that is such a stupid stereotype. i have plenty of southern friends and i always find their accents to be beautiful. and they are smart, so anyone who judges you like that is an idiot and instead of losing the accent you should lose them!

No, don't lose it that is what makes you unique I have a southern accent or texas accent and I have never tried to get rid of it. I live in California and people make fun of my accent but I don't care so please keep it.

In my opinion, southern accents are charming. I recently moved to Georgia and so many people have accents, when I hear them talk I can't help but smile. I wish I had one, too!  : )
