Does having a visible tattoo make getting a job harder?

i don't have any tattoos, yet, but i find it interesting and so what if i decide to have one, would it make getting employed any harder?

i was thinking the back or hands, both pretty visible places, so would it make a difference?

i'd like to know about your personal experiences with this kind of thing, have you ever lost a job or not hired someone because of a tattoo?

tnx

  1. *it just all depends on what you are trying to apply for. I (personally) love tattoos but I'm not the one you're trying to work for. You gotta keep in mind that it's all about presentation and your first impression just might be your last impression.

  2. Sometimes, as long as its not gang-related.

  3. it depends where it is to be honest, if youre thinking about the back of your hands then it might ber harder, but it also depends on where you want to work? ive got one on my wrist and im fine...

  4. ILET ME START OUT BY SAYING I AM FEMALE AND I HAVE 16 TATTOOS.IT IS HARDER TO FIND A JOB WITH THEM.I WORKED IN DAYCARES FOR YEARS AND ALL THE SUDDEN...YEAH THE MGR AT A NEW DAYCARE SAID SHE CANNOT HIRE ME B CUZ OF THEM.FUNNY TOO CUZ MOST ARE CARTOON CHARACTERS.BUT SERIOUSLY,THEY DO LOOK AT YOU DIFFRENTLY.IT SUCKS BUT THATS HOW THE WORLD WORKS!

  5. alot of places dont like you to have tattoos.

  6. I guess as long as you work hard and they see on the paper that you give them that your smart I think it will be ok.

But you should decide carefully because when you get older you might not think the same.

  7. if you dont have any tattoos, i wouldnt suggest getting any on your hands, most tattoo parlours would advise you against this also. but back doesnt sound bad. i have them on my feet and leg and although my contract says they find it more respectable not to show them, my boss doesnt mind at all. many employers are with the day and age and wont neccessarily discriminate because you have visible tattoos, if you have all the best qualifications why shouldnt they employ you.

also if it helps a friend of mine has colour in her hair, visible tattoo on her wrist, flesh tunnels and a lip piercing and shes earning £85000+ a year, so it didnt stop her

if you are overly worried just stay clear of face/neck and hand/forearm tattoos. anywhere else is quite easily covered

  8. Depends on your line of work - if you're aiming for a professional position you'll have trouble, if you're going into service sector or manual work, not so much. It's common sense, really - how many policeman/solicitors/judges/corporate bankers etc have you seen with tats on their hands?

  9. it depends on what the tattoo is and where you want to work, but i would say yes. if you get it in a less visible place or if its a really artistic tattoo (not freaky) that should be ok.

  10. it all depends on the type of job u want to do i know security and police have strict rules on tattoos

  11. I have 5 tattoo's and it wasn't hard for me to land this great job I have.

  12. Most places yeah. Corporate areas would have a problem. You can probably still get some that aren't as noticeable like on your back or stomach, ribs, whatever your clothes usually hide. Other places asre maybe more liberal about it, like if you wanna work at a hair salon or a store at the mall. Just ask were you wanna work about their policies on tattoos.

  13. It depends what sort of job you are going for, I know when I was looking for work there were people that stipulated no visible tattoos.  I would advise getting one somewhere that can be covered, then when you have a job you can guage how they feel about it and decide if you want to commit to something that is visible at all times.

  14. I have what most people would consider visible tattoos, but if I wear long sleeves and pants, no one knows I have any.  I set it up that way on purpose, just in case.

It really depends on what type of work you want to get into.  I did internal accounting for a Fortune 500 company and my tattoos were never an issue since I never worked with the public.  But if you do any sort of retail or anything dealing with regular interaction with customers/clients, a visible tattoo may very well impede on your chance of getting the job.

Personally, I would go for some place you can cover with a shirt if needed, but obviously, the choice is completely yours.
