  1. Dear No Name Here-

Over 50% of men over 50 years of age have an enlarged prostate - alias BPH (Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy).  BPH has no connection with cancer even though an enlarged prostate could have cancer.  In a younger man, an enlarged prostate usualy results from an infection, perhaps from an inadequately treated gonorrhea.

  2. Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) also known as nodular hyperplasia, benign prostatic hypertrophy (technically a misnomer) or benign enlargement of the prostate (BEP) refers to the increase in size of the prostate in middle-aged and elderly men. To be accurate, the process is one of hyperplasia rather than hypertrophy, but the nomenclature is often interchangeable, even amongst urologists. It is characterized by hyperplasia of prostatic stromal and epithelial cells, resulting in the formation of large, fairly discrete nodules in the periurethral region of the prostate. When sufficiently large, the nodules compress the urethral canal to cause partial, or sometimes virtually complete, obstruction of the urethra which interferes the normal flow of urine. It leads to symptoms of urinary hesitancy, frequent urination, increased risk of urinary tract infections and urinary retention. Although prostate specific antigen levels may be elevated in these patients because of increased organ volume and inflammation due to urinary tract infections, BPH is not considered to be a premalignant lesion.

Adenomatous prostatic growth is believed to begin at approximately age 30 years. An estimated 50% of men have histologic evidence of BPH by age 50 years and 75% by age 80 years. In 40-50% of these patients, BPH becomes clinically significant.

You should definitely see your physician immediately

  3. Yes and No.

You need to have an exam by your GP, he will recommend several things if he thinks its needed,

A blood test (for i think PSA these are pre cancer cells)

    An ultra sound,

    or an MRI.

it could be just an enlarged prostate due to your age...

    could only need medication

  4. No, could be infected. Consult a doctor

  5. Not necessary, but it may ultimately cause cancer, if not treated properly on time.  The prostate glands actually serve as a gate way or control valve for the urine to pass appropriately.  When these two go out of order, the urine goes out of order.  If it starts letting the urine pass partially and the rest is retained inside the bladder, there starts the problem.  Sometime, the urine is completely blocked and that becomes utmost serious situation for one to face.  That is how the cancer starts developing and deteriorating rapidly.

However, there is nothing to worry about too much because after all it is curable.  It is, in fact, an infection in the prostate glands and if ignored over a period of time may start worsening.  But any infection may become worse if not treated on time.  Therefore, you visit a medical doctor (Urologist) and start getting your prostate glands treated well.  You will be ok.

Wish you all the best and quickest recovery.  So long.

  6. NOt necessarily, however I had an enlarged prostate for 30 years or so and when I was 63 I had prostate cancer.... I had infections in the early years and then when i as 55-56 I had trouble urinating and had to have rotter rooter surgery.. (turp) then the cancer at 63> I had proton radiation at loma linda uiniversity medical center in california and I am fine now ....4 years later.. psa is .13...point one three> Id say you just need to be sure and have a prostate exam every year plus have a psa test annually also....stay on top ot the situation... I would also avoid riding bikes.. I think thats where part of my problem came from.. Prostate problems and those little skinny bike seats dont get along well at all...

  7. No, there are other diseases/conditions that can cause an enlarged prostate besides cancer.

  8. No alot of men have enlarged prostates...and rarely has anything to do with cancer. It's usually a disorder called benign prostate hypertrophy and usually you can just take medications to keep it under control. Saying that, I hope you've seen a doctor to rule out cancer because it's a small chance it is that but if it is prostate cancer is easily cured if caught early

  9. Medical research has shown that over time, the prostate has a tendency to enlarge over a period of time. Not all men will have enlarged prostates but it seems to be a common occurrence after the age of 40 (which is why your physician should be ordering a PSA or equivalent lab test at your annual check-up). There are more unusual occasions when a man much younger may experience an enlarged prostate. This could be due to genetics, cancer, infection or some other reason. If you're a young person and exhibiting any symptoms (see the link below and scroll down to "Prostate Changes That Are Not Cancer - Enlarged prostate Symptoms.")

If you have concerns, the best thing is to see a health care practitioner and have some tests done.

  10. No but you need a professional opinion.
