  1. It will tell you in the users manual.

    No Manual, go to the manufactures web site and look up your model.


  2. It depends on the manufacturer & model. Look in the model specs/manuals for something like "DVB digital or QAM" tuner availability to indicate whether you need a set-top box or not.

    for examples:

    Panasonic Viera th-42py800h does not have a digital tuner & their website specifications would tell : http://panasonic.com.sg/web/pid/5444/Spe...

    Sony 46" Bravia XBR says it has the digital tuner : http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stor...

    Similarly, Toshiba 46XV540U says it has builtin digital tuner (ATSC for analog  old coaxial + QAM for digital encoded receivers).
