my little man is 14 weeks and has been on baby rice for about 2 weeks, (he was very hungry and had been on 2nd stage milk since he was 4 weeks) but today i noticed his poo has become a very dark green and watery where as normally it is quite yellow and firm. I'm unsure if either is normal as he is showing no signs of discomfort and is still a very happy baby.

i understand that alot of people have opinions on giving rice at such an early age but i did so on the advive of my health visitor and now my son sleeps through the night!

p.s he only has one rice feed a day and only has around 3 spoonfuls atm

  1. You hit the nail on the head. 3 months of age is to young for rice cereal. There is numerous research studies done that prove giving an infant cereal does not help them sleep throughout the night.  I would have your "health visitor" do some research. By giving children solid food at such a young age you are increasing their risk of developing food allergies.

His stools are a direct result of two things 1) the food that goes into him and 2) if he is having any stomach virus's.

I think that stage 2 milk if for babys older then 6 months (is that right). This is because the proteins and other ingredients are not broken down as easily as the stage one formula.

  2. It sounds like a bit of diarrhoea,  make sure that he is hydrated, you may want to offer him some water in addition to his milk.  You can skip the solid feeding if you think it might be too hard on his stomach.

  3. I'm not even going to comment on the rice cereal, but sometimes babies have been known to get slight diahrrea when they pop a tooth.

  4. Nurse JC hit the nail right on the head...what you are experiencing with your little guy is the exact reason solids should not be started before 6 months. Even the 4 month marker that the Baby Food companies are pushing is too early. Their little stomachs just cannot break it down, even 3 spoonfuls. Keep an eye on him and make sure he isn't running a fever with a possible virus and cut out the Rice for a couple of days if not permenantly until 6 months~~Aloha and Blessings~~
