I am not looking for actual facts - this is a public question and I would like to hear what you base your answer on. Why do you feel so strongly that history does or does not repeat itself.

  1. You know, there's a fabulous BUSINESS book about the lessons of history - How to use history as a guide for the present.  It comes down to 4 guidelines on whether an episode in history can be useful or not, and practical ways to apply this.

Can't remember the name of the book, but it's got an opening chpt. on Cortez, another on Midway, one on the king who unified medieval France, has a picture on it of Cortez wearing metallic spectacles...Darn, wish I could remember the title!  Maybe that's worth another yahoo question.

  2. I am a firm believer in "Those who do not know their history, are condemned to repeat it"

If you don't study history, most likely you're gonna end up making the same mistakes our previous generation(s) did. Unfortunately, I think people tend to ignore history and make the same mistakes, always thinking THEY'RE be "right" this time.

For, say, example: Hitler's idiotic plan to take invade Russia. Tsk, tsk....if he only knew what happened to Napoleon when he tried.

  3. Oh yes definitely, like deja vu. Although situations may not be exactly the same, but the main ideas may repeat itself, like when i am stressed i get sick. This happened like over and over again. Ok, it may not be the best example but u get the idea!:)

  4. Yes it does. But the negative can be prevented if we learn from our past.

  5. Yes and no. In a general sense history does tend to repeat itself. But a good analogy is that history is like a pendulum, it will move from one extreme to the next, but never end up in the same exact spot.

  6. Yeah,it does, cause life is a never ending circle, and the humans have always been mortals that have sinful thoughts one from another...not speaking about religion,btw...Humanity has always the same flaws, but in a different point of view, however, they are escencially the same...

  7. Yes.

  8. Hey!

  9. Yes, look at society for example. The society builds, conquers, develops new ideas and they reach enlightenment. Than after their golden age they slowly decline, they might end up in civil war or the empire falls. Than the new powerful empire takes them over. Examples: Ancient Rome, Ancient Greece.
