Question:

Does holding something in your hand while you punch make a difference?

I've heard that if you hold something small in your hand, (like a cell phone or a salt shaker or something like that) it makes your punch more effective. I think it has something to do with the way it structures the bones in your hand.

Does anyone know if there's any truth to this?

  1. yes, hence why people use a roll of pennies or nickles in their fist from time to time.

  2. Ummm no truth to cell phones and salt shakers...

But heavy objects such as a roll of pennies or quarters, or having your keys between your fingers... it doesn't make it more effective though.

Honestly, as Katana said, if you already punch like c**p, it won't make a difference, however if you have good form already, it adds more weight to your fist, giving it more inertia and force.

You want something smaller because it allows you to still mostly close your fist (smaller impact area, higher psi). But it is the weight, not the fact you are holding it that makes the difference, and it doesn't make your punch more effective then doing it properly, it just adds to the overall inertia.

In truth it isn't how hard you punch per say, but how accurate and where you punch.

  3. yes its true

  4. It does make a difference, but if you learn how to punch correctly first, rather then flailing around like a spaz, you don't need it.

  5. yeah it gives you more 'umph' and your fist will be thicker if that makes since... i would go with a roll of quarters :]

  6. yer you may or may not have noticed that guards around casinos have elastic bands around there hand... well it is for this reason.

  7. Makes the fist harder and therefore stronger. Prevents from injury like a hand wrap.

  8. The weight may help the impact blow, but if it is an awkward size, you could break your fingers etc. Remember also that if you do this in many states you could be charged with a more serious crime if you really hurt someone, because what you are holding can be considered an extra weapon. I.E. brass knuckles, kronkles, etc.

  9. Yeah can have a huge impact depending on what weight you are holding

  10. The only kind of object you should have in your hand before you hit somebody is a weapon designed for striking. You don't want to close  your hand around a rock or a billiard ball and then hit somebody. That's a good way to break your hand.

  11. It's physics. Yes.

  12. I think the power while punching not comes from hands. It comes from whole body position and your concentration to the energy through hands.
