Question:

Does home insurance cover ants?

We had a lot of rain here in the midwest the past few days, and it seems to have flooded a colony of ants living near my home. This morning they were swarming the floor, wall and window in my son's bedroom. Does homeowner's insurance cover this since it's weather related?

  1. I'm not sure why you would want to file a claim against your homeowners policy for ants?

Most likely, the cost won't be any higher than your deductible...so you'll still pay out of pocket for the services.

And then your homeowners insurance premium would go up for filing a claim.

This is just my personal opinion (health insurance is my professional expertise, not homeowners), but I would never file a homeowners claim for something minor like that.  You'd end up paying way too much out of your pocket, between the deductible and then paying higher premiums.

  2. Homeowners policies do not cover the ridding of insects, or the damage they cause. Neither will the cover the ridding of vermin nor the damage they cause.

Call your local exterminator. I have used Dodson Brothers Pest Control for termites and carpenter ants.

  3. Nope, it's not covered.  They don't cover fleas, either, or termites, or even mice that move in during the winter.

It's specifically excluded under your policy.  Plus, technically speaking, the ants haven't done any DAMAGE yet.  So the exterminator cost is up to YOU.  And I'd do it, because the damage (for carpenter ants) isn't going to be covered, either.

    This is a maintenance issue.

  4. I dont know but i doubt they did any damage.

  5. It may but I doubt it.  To be sure, you can go to the site of your home insurance company and check the detailed coverage of your plan.  You may even be able to just ask animously if you dont want yet to know you are asking this matter.

Try to go to this site.  It may help you some.

  6. we had the same trouble here. We recently purchased a bottle of terro,  the ants where real hungry for 1 day.  And for the last 2 there have not been but a couple of ants to be found.  This is as bad as I have seen in 10 years.  We did use about 1/2 the bottle but 1 treatment in about 8 places has them cut down 99%.  Good Luck

Home owners insurance will not disposal of ants.

  7. Probably not.  Just use a mix of cinnamon and sugar. The ants will pick up the sugar, along with the cinnamon, and take it back to their queen. Ants can’t digest cinnamon and once the queen dies from not being able to digest the cinnamon the colony will die without her.

  8. Damage by insects is excluded by the policy.

Therefore, ants (and termites) are excluded.

You will have to call the exterminator yourself.

Many pest companies will put your home under a service to come out and treat your home every 3 months. You may want to look into something like that. Also -a termite bond if you don't have one.
