  1. Thomas Edison was not only homeschooled, but unschooled for the bulk of his education.

  2. I don't think it is ineffective. You should check how many famous (and brilliant) people has been homeschooled. Most writers, some scientists and so on. You can check here: http://www.knowledgehouse.info/famous.ht...

You can also check the statistics, as it is known that many college and universities target homeschoolers because they are self-motivated, independent students and know how to work by themselves in many topics.

You can check the statistics here: http://www.chec.org/Legislative/News/Hom...

    http://www.hslda.org/docs/nche/000010/20...

  3. You "feel" it is ineffective? That is hardly evidence to support any theory, is it? I can "feel" like the world is flat. It won't effect the shape of the planet. Have you actually looked for facts that support or dispute your "feeling"?

To answer your second question, yes. Google famous homeschoolers. Remember, before brick schooling was mandatory in the US the literacy rate was higher and nearly everyone was homeschooled.

  4. Yes, because people like you would have a better chance to learn not to make such grotesque generalizations about effectiveness based on no evidence.

  5. It probably works in the academic area , but it lacks on social skills who are very important to succeed.

Not everything is money and fame. SOCIAL SKILLS (how you relate to other people) is very important to succeed.

I know a graduate student who has many diplomas and certificates (was home schooled) and guess what? lack of social skills keeps him at home. No one hires him because he can't hold a decent interview.

  6. It is actually better for children to learn social skills as well as academics, and they might lot learn it if they're home-schooled.

  7. I would counter your third question with one of my own: Are there any great minds that have been public schooled?

Of course, most readers know the answer to that is "of course!" It is the same for those who are homeschooled (read the list another poster listed).

I believe the point in ANY education is to teach the student the skills he needs to know, along with an appropriate education in a variety of subjects, to be a responsible and independent citizen.

Public schools and private schools are not the only way to achieve these goals; homeschooling is a third viable option.

For many students, traditional schools do not "really work". For many students, homeschooling may not work. Ultimately, it's up to the parents AND the children to make their educationally opportunity work.

  9. Thomas Edison is the first that comes to mind. He was pulled out of school at the age of 7, taught by his mother to read, write and do math, then was unschooled--he taught himself a good deal of stuff, most of which was science-related. Try doing a search for "famous homeschoolers" and you'll come up with some lists.

Homeschooling will be as ineffective or effective as the parent guiding the homeschooling and the student involved. Frankly, when you look at history, the big scientific discoveries would have been from people who homeschooled. Surely those are great minds?

ADDED: Jan. 17 was Benjamin Franklin's birthday. Did you know that he was considered THE best scientist in the US until Thomas Edison came along? And you know what? Benjamin Franklin only went to school for 2 years. After that, he unschooled--taught himself by himself with the use of books--a wide variety of things, from navigation to algebra to 4 different languages!!! I'd call him a great mind. :)

  10. Thanks Pink....you took the presidents right out of my mouth

    ;-)

Personal feelings are invalid in arguments based on logic. SInce there are millions of people who have homeschooled and proven it effective, your argument has been disproven.

Edit: Why do kids need to learn to deal with fist fights at school? Why should they tolerate people disrupting their education by acting out in class? As an adult, what would happen if you got angry and punched someone at work? If you threw spitballs at the CEO of your company? If you gossiped about your coworkers? Do you think you'd keep that job (outside of a WWF career and Reality TV Shows, i don't think so) The world is full of public schoolers who never get very far because they can't drop the socialization they learned in public school...popularity is not what makes the world go 'round, fighting doesn't solve your problems and no one is going to force feed you the answers the rest of your life.

  11. Our son is a  people person so his social life has not changed since beginning homeschool. He can study at home and not disturb other students or his teacher when he does the social thing during the school hours.

It is actually better for children to learn social skills as well as academics, and they might not learn those if they are stuck in a classroom with limited exposure to real life situations.

He is not a great mind but I'm proud of him.

Homeschool has worked for our family.   Our son was in  8th grade when we started homeschooling.  We saw immediate improvement in academics.

  12. Home schooling can't be that great, kids need to be socalized.  Yes there are fights and such at school but kids need to learn how to deal with it.....its life....its out there.

  13. Actually, I don't know any homeschoolers who are under school average, and I know a lot of very bright homeschoolers. When most of homeschoolers take GCSE's very early, for instance three years and sometimes even four years...how can anyone say that it doesn't work for some people and doesn't academically get them through that stage?

    Just my opinion =)

  14. There are a few - see article below...

Plus, homeschoolers are aggressively recruited by top colleges because it does work.

    Recently ...

... a homeschool brother and sister took first place in a national History Day competition.

... a homeschool student was inducted into the 4H hall of fame.

... a homeschooled team won first in a national aerospace competition.

Check out the second link from CBS News entitled: Colleges Coveting Home-Schooled Students

What makes you **personally** feel it is ineffective?  All the evidence proves otherwise.

  15. i think that a kid needs other kids thier age because sometimes they can explain it to each other and better understand it

  16. Here's a list of famous homeschoolers:

  17. Speaking as someone who was, all the way through highschool, I loved it. Most of my homeschooled peers are getting their doctorates now, or masters, and socially awkward we might have been in middleschool (who isn't, really?), but not anymore. Academically it worked wonderfully in most areas, though I have to confess to a few holes in my education, and socially our parents made it work.

Homeschooling leads to more opportunities for field trips, and the ability to pursue knowledge as far as each person wants. We worked through the summers to get ahead, took college courses in highschool, and all of us have a joy in learning because we didn't get bored waiting in a classroom all day.

Ineffective? To whom have you been talking?

  18. Learning to socialize, share and play with other kids is a very crucial part of growing up.  Homeschooling may hinder this growth in a child.

For all of you saying that homeschoolers have doctorates, I went to public school my whole life and have a post doc degree.  The best part is I can socialize with my peers easily.  Going to school is not just about reading and math; its about learning to get along with others.  I've seen many students when I was in university who were really smart but had the personality of a tree stump.  I'm not saying they were all homeschooled, but I am trying to show that knowing how to socialize is also an important aspect of a well-rounded person.

  19. i am home schooled i just as many maybe more friends then anyone i know its is hard.. harder then public school.. i  can say that..you have to be deicated and really want it..but i can go to an collage anywheres i want and be anything i want just like like a public schooled chiled... i find that i can talk to anyone i want and sound as smart and end up with another friend just like that...but yes if being home schooled you need to stay active and make yourself make friends so i say join the ymca and do something like soccer do it only for friends and exersice..also i dont know if you do but go to church and if older join the youth group lots of friends there....just because you are home schooled dont mean you are stupider or  unable to make friends thats a bunch of c**p..but you cant be scared of home schooling like i said you have to want it...and Albert Einstein was home schooled...also its easyer to go into your fild you want to be in when older

  20. Dr. Condolece Rice was homeschooled for 6 years.

College studies show the typical homeschoolers is 1-3 grade ahead of brick schoolers.

Maybe you'd know more if you were homeschooled!

The ABC 20/20 show "Stupid in America" showed what public schools were all about!
