  1. You bet ya.

  2. This sounds like an alcoholics self justification for not kicking the habit.

In fact diabetics are badly affected by alcohol intake since their blood sugar goes down.  Some evidence that a (one single small) glass of red wine does lower cholesterol levels and aid health.  BUT the question above sounds like a very useful new old wives tale for alcoholics to cling to when explaining why they can't give up booze.

If worried that you are an alcoholic try giving up all alcohol for one week.  If you can't then you should perhaps address the problem

  3. The American Heart Association recommends that if people choose to drink, they should drink moderately.  One should limit alcoholic beverages to 1-2 drinks per day (A drink is one 12 oz. beer, 5 oz. of wine, 1.5 oz. of 80-proof spirits, or 1 oz. of 100-proof spirits).  Studies have found that people who drink moderately have heart disease less often than nondrinkers.  However, when people do drink  more alcohol, public health dangers increase.  These include alcoholism, high blood pressure, obesity, stroke, breast cancer, suicide, and accidents.  Given these risks, we caution non-drinkers NOT to start drinking, but if individuals choose to drink they should consult their doctor on the benefits and risks of drinking alcohol in moderation.  This is especially crucial for people with diabetes -- alcohol should only be used if your diabetes is under good control and your doctor/provider approves.

  4. Everything in moderation is good for you.

Many studies show that the benefits of red wine taken in moderate amount (one drink a day for women and two drinks a day for men) lowers the risk of heart attack for people in middle age by ~ 30 to 50 percent. It is also suggested that alcohol such as red wine may prevent additional heart attacks if you have already suffered from one. Other studies also indicated that red wine can raise HDL cholesterol (the Good cholesterol) and prevent LDL cholesterol (the Bad cholesterol) from forming. Red wine may help prevent blood clots and reduce the blood vessel damage caused by fat deposits.

Red wine is also a very good of antioxidants.

  5. nope

  6. Alcohol (particularly ethanol - the kind used in alcoholic beverages) precipitate proteins and solubilize lipids present in cell membranes. Precipitate proteins means to make the proteins solid and separate them from the liquid present in the cells. Solubilize lipids means to make the lipids (or fat) more soluble in water or liquids. When you do this to cells you “mess them up” and kill them, basically.  Let's say that's the good news.

The flip of the coin is the bad outcome of alcoholism.  And we all know what that is.  So if we have to drink, let's drink moderately and responsibly.

    Bottoms Up!!!
