  1. The hslda website is down today, but according to nhen, Illinois homeschools are private schools so your parents should be able to set your hours.  5 hours of straight book work per day is a lot, IMO.

Talk to your mom about the requirements and see if you can reach an agreement on reducing your work load a bit.  Or see if she will replace some of the book work with fun projects or free reading time.

I hope the two of you can work something out that will help you meet the goals she has for you without you feeling overburdened.  Good luck!

  2. I'm in IL and no, there are no rules for the number of hours you must study in a day.

Here is the best link about IL HS'ing:

    http://www.illinoishouse.org/

    Click on "IL HS'ing Laws"

Here is the excerpt from the page:

    http://www.illinoishouse.org/a14.htm

<<Compulsory Attendance: Compulsory attendance begins upon a child's 7th birthday and continues until their 17th birthday (unless the child has already graduated from high school). This is according to Illinois Annotated Code Section 26-1.

Note - Attendance: Attendance does NOT mean sitting at a desk for five hours. Homeschooling, by its very nature, incorporates a wide variety of experiences. There are no mandated numbers of hours per day or days per year of attendance for private schools in Illinois.>>

  3. You can check out the requirements for each state at this web site.

  4. If you can't negotiate the hours with your mum, you may be able to negotiate the content. If she's making you do 'busywork' just for the sake of working, ask if you can cut down on that and study a new subject of interest or work on a craft instead. If it's something that helps her out like cooking or fixing stuff around the house, you'll have a good chance of convincing her.

  5. IL has very few rules on the subject of HS.
