I will take a cruise from Seatle to Alaska round trip. On the way back the ship will stop at Victoria (Canada) for 5 hours. I am not planning on walking out of the ship, but still I dont know if they will ask me or not for any type of document. I am a resident alien and have a residency card (green card) but I dont have a passport from my country. I want to make sure I will not get in trouble for not taking a document (for example a passport) If any body knows anything about this kind of situation please let me know.

  1. I believe you need a passport to even take the cruise.  Silly law I know , but that law was supposed to take effect last year.

  2. Yes you need a passport to go on a cruise. I think you need to show it when you board the ship before check in. It used to be a birth certificate was good enough but not anymore.

  3. it's always a good idea to have a passport when traveling.  It can avoid lots of headaches.

Also, if you ever lose your license, a passport is the ideal identification to cash checks and get your license replaced.  When this happened to me, my passport was accepted unquestioningly, and it had expired years ago.

  4. As of a few months ago, anyone who travels outside of there country, Even on a cruise is required to have a passport. It used to be fine just with you birth certificate, but now you can't do that. Getting your passport is an easy process, go to your local county office, post office, or county store to apply. It is about $60. and If you apply more then 14 days before you travel, it will come in 2 weeks. If you go 14 ddays or less before you travel, you can get it sent to you faster, it may be a little more money, but not much.

  5. You are asking the wrong people seek passport and laws change in the line.  Traveling now is know joke if u do not mind the inconvenience.  I know on a cruise now you are not getting the amenities, food, etc. even the cabins needed techincal help and they knew you were booked.  They should have taken care of everything before we got on the crusie ship.  The best thing now if you have a home and backyard act it out.

  6. At this point, a passport is strongly recommended but not required for US citizens.

Any Americans travelling by AIR is required to have their a passport to enter the United States.  People travelling by car, cruise ship (or walking or biking I suppose) do not - a birth certificate and driver's license is enough.

But you aren't yet a citizen of the US - you have a green card.  So the regulations regarding your visit to Canada will depend on your country's visa requirements with Canada.  We don't have enough information to answer your questions accurately.

Many of the cruise lines have information lines to call with questions like these - your case is not the typical one but is common enough that they should have the answers for you.

And if they do not have the answer for you, call the closest embassy for your country.

    Enjoy your trip!

  7. Yes unfortunetly.

  8. If you don't step off the ship you don't need a visa. however if you are asked you must provide identification drivers license and birth certificate were generally accepted however i believe a passport is required.
