Does incest apply when you breed dogs?

One of my good friends has a female Siberian Husky and he was going to breed her with his friend's male Siberian Husky. He is going to give one male puppy to my boy friend and I will get a female puppy. My boy friend and I were both talking and we wanted to know if it was possible for the two sibling Huskies to breed together without a problem or do you need another dog that isn't related to them? Like, I'm pretty sure you can't breed the mom Husky with the son husky, correct?

  1. You should not breed brother to sister either.  You will be asking for problems with the offspring.  It's called in-breeding and is not recomemended.

  2. That's the most disgusting thing I have ever heard. No, you do not breed a brother and a sister. Like, I'm pretty sure that you and your boyfriend shouldn't be breeding any dogs.. related or not! BYB!

  3. Incestuous relationships when breeding dogs should ONLY be done with breeders that have thick knowledge of genetics and breeding.

A novice breeder can bring out several bad traits from a related pair. Things like aggression issues, deformities, behavior issues, etc.

Your friend shouldn't be breeding PERIOD. Unless his dog has won best in show titles, has been tested for hips, eyes, elbows, spine, etc, has been shown in conformation, etc, and has been PROVEN that its a superior quality dog, there is no reason to breed.

You will actually be getting a low-quality dog, that risks having hip dysplasia (as is common in badly bred huskies), and shoulder and joint issues. Not to mention biological issues and behavioral issues.

  4. Yes....the same reasons for humans regarding inbreeding.  I'm not an expert in any way on genetics but the answer would be No.  Your instincts are quite correct.

  5. You need a dog thats not related. Inbreeding is very bad, this definitely applies to dogs

  6. That is called in breeding and should not be practiced by a novice.  To breed at all do some serious homework first and start reading.

  7. inbreading dog will cause problems...

  8. You can breed brother and sister but you only do this when you have a very indepth knowledge of the genetic recessive genes carried by them, their parents, their grandparents and their great-grandparents.  All breeds have certain genetic health problems which are carried in a recessive gene.  If both parents have this recessive gene then a percentage of the pups in the litter will have this genetic health problem.  The fact that you are mating brother and sister greatly increases the risk that both are carrying the recessive gene.

For example, my sister-in-law "accidentally" bred her brother and sister stumpy tail cattle dogs.  This breed carries a recessive gene connected to the blue merle gene which causes deafness.  Both parents were fine and could hear but obviously, unknown to her they both carried the recessive gene for deafness and several of the pups were born deaf.

Of course, deafness is not the worst thing that could happen to a pup.  You should do some research cos there are some really terrible and debilitating genetic canine diseases out there.

I would never recommend mating a brother and sister for a novice breeder.  There is too much potential for heartbreak.  It isn't worth it.

Also, there are a lot of beautiful Siberian Huskies sitting in shelters waiting to be euthanised.  Maybe, rather than bring more puppies into the world to possibly end up where these lovely dogs are (dead dogs walking) you could consider looking around and rescuing one of these and giving them a chance at a better life.  They don't deserve to die and the more puppies that are brought into the world the less their chances of living are - there are only so many good forever homes out there.

  9. A. Yes it is still incest - its called inbreeding and it can cause major genetic issues

    B. For the love of god please just get your dogs fixed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! No more breeding because it sounds fun or to make money or 'becaues you can'. STOP IT. ALL OF YOU. Backyard breeder should be against the law. You are adding to all the unwanted dogs in this world. There are enough in the shelters that don't have homes. Unless you are breeding to the breed standard and have premission from your breeder to breed your dogs (which you most likely won't get because she sold them to you as pet quality) that another reason to NOT BREED THEM.

What the F is wrong with everyone these days. Every Joe Shmoe on every g-d corner is becoming a 'breeder'. Just stop. Please.
