  1. I work for a large insurance company that is based in all 50 states and 4 continents. All plans cover mental health counseling unless the plan is self-insured in which they have the option to carve-out benefits. Benefits are usually pretty similar to office visit coverage outlined in your contract benefits. Keep in mind that you may need to use certain providers to receive your highest level of benefits. Call your insurance company, they would be more than happy to outline your benefits for you.

  2. It depends upon the type of health insurance plan and the type of counseling. If it is an employer-sponsored, group plan mental health office visit are normally paid at 50% and there might be a maximum number of visits per calendar year. Generally, mental problems includes alcohol or drug problems. However, martial counseling is not covered.

If you have an individual health insurance plan, it is unlikely any type of counseling is covered but your best option regardless of what type of plan you have is to call the Insurance Company and ask them what is and what is not covered. You might also be required to go to specific  "preferred" providers so don't go to counseling without checking with your insurance company.

For people without insurance or insurance that is not meeting their needs, the United Way offers mental health, martial and financial counseling. The fee is based on your income. Look for an office is your area.

  3. Depends on the company but most do. Check with your benefits counselor for their advice.
