and they insist on taking your name and address before they will sell you an item.

This has happened to me a couple of times I bought a microwave and they wouldnot sell it to me unless I provided them with my name and address, also the same thing happened with a hoover.

Now I understand this has to happen if you are purchasing any type of receiving equipment, i.e TVs etc, but so far havent been able to get a very good picture from the microwave.

Why should we have to give our addreses out just so they can send us adverts through the post. What do you think?

  1. That's exactly why they do it... to send you advertising, or to sell your information to other advertisers.

If it bothers you, then buy somewhere else that doesn't require it, and send a polite but irked letter to the headquarters of that company, noting they lost your business because of this practice.

  2. I have never had this happen, if you give me your name and address, and a current photo, I will tell you more :)

  3. shocking

  4. just give them any old address if you feel it is a problem giving your correct address

  5. I believe the reason they do this is for insurance reasons. If you buy an electrical item you are usually sold the item with a set warranty.Because shoplifting is big business with electrical items the shop now takes your name and address for your benefit, not their's.It's proof on your warranty of where you purchased the item.Receipts scams are also big business so it's the only way to make sure your covered really.I've found it to be helpful before when wanting my washing machine fixed,I couldn't for the life of me find the warranty receipt but I Phoned Curry's and they phoned the washing machine repair people and gave proof that A) I was the buyer and B) the date I purchased the item.

  6. I'd find somewhere else to shop like on-line.

  7. The answer to that is tell them that you will take your business elsewhere if they refuse to sell to you unless you give your address. They need the sales but you have the choice where to spend your money and on what terms

  8. I can tell you that for TV's it is a legal requirement. The licensing authorities imposed it a while ago to track those trying to avoid paying the License. I don't see the need regarding the other items though. Why don't you ask them straight out. If you don't get a sensible answer, don't buy.
