it is a law to buckle up in the car (at least in Ohio it is), but motorcycle riders aren't even required to wear a HELMET?

I mean I always buckle up anyway...I feel naked if I don't...but it seems weird that they legally enforce safety belts but not helmets for bikers....

  1. I guess.

The helmet for motorcycle riders is like a seatbelt except for motorcycle riders.

    So yeah.

  2. i completely agree but i dont ride motorcycles my parents do and their positions on it is if they want to ride on a really safe road going really slow and careful it should be legal and it is half the fun to feel the wind in your hair..

  3. It bothers me as well.......

  4. OK I agree that that is just foolish. We all know the risks & if people are foolish enough to do without this saftey then that is thier own choice.

However this is a better questions if there is the law for seatbelts why are there no seatbelts in school busses?

  5. It bothers me.  It seems people don't care if something is safe or not they just want to know what the law is.  I also would be in support of seat belts required for all vehicle occupants.

Having said that, the reason that motorcyclists are not required to wear helmets is that they have strong advocate groups.  Helmets used to be required in the entire country by Federal mandate.  However, pressure for "state rights" caused the federal government to lift the mandate and allow the states to make their own laws.  Some states that implemented laws had their capitols stormed by motorcycle advocate groups.  Sometimes these groups would get on their bikes and ride around the capitol all day in protest.

No, it isn't right that its not against the law.  But don't make it a fairness contest between seatbelts and helmets.  Do the right thing, be safe.

Here's some seatbelt videos you should watch if you're not in support of seatbelt use (I know this question says you are.. but others will read this in the future).

  6. exactly its completely ridiculous!!! but if they want to risk their life than that's their choice. and if you really look at a motorcycle anyone could easily fall off the side and theres not even anything to hold you down. it drives me insane when i see someone with no helmet

  7. I think it should be a law. There are many bicycle related deaths because of no helmet wear.

  8. Doesn't bother me!    Cyclists are aware of the dangers if they choose to ride uncovered.

  9. It doesn't bother me. I would wear a belt and wear a helmet (I also ride).

I kinda think that if they have no respect for their own head...

    Good Luck...

  10. I am against mandatory rules and regulations like seat belt and helmet laws. The government should not be in the business of enforcing safety on the individual. There are oh so many other activities that humans engage in that are just as risky as driving cars or riding motorcycles that have no regulations in place at all. Skateboarding for example. Or hang gliding. Both can and have resulted in deaths and debilitating injuries. The decision to protect yourself from yourself should be an individual choice and not made for you by the government.

  11. doesn't bother me. why does it bother you.
