I have had 3 different cat, all male, that don't cover it. They just scratch something else (like the side of the box)for a long time and then get out.

  1. Yes.  I don't know why.

  2. It dosent hurt them because God gave them tough paws so they could pounce on things and run and stuff  :-P

but I think cats scratch their paws on stuff for the same reason that they rub up against your leg, Or mabey they are trying to keep their paws sharp or something, idk : )

  3. My 4 year old female cats always cover up their poo and wee. But always wipe their feet for about 5 minutes afterwards. Even when they sniff the litter box they wipe their feet!? Its wierd! They also try and rip up the newspaper underneath their litter box. Maybe its just instinct. I use crystals aswell and my cats dont really seem to mind.

  4. I have a male cat that doesn't cover his littler all the time either. He also scratches the wall after he pees or poos in there. I read that if a cat does that then they don't like their litter. I use "Cat attract litter". He seems to like it though.....

  5. It's built into their behavior.  I have 3 cats, one male, two females, and one girl doesn't cover her goings.  She believes she's the "ALPHA" Female.  It's probably that your males all think their the superior one in the home.  Try getting different litter boxes for all three.  Also on the scratching the side of the box, that just started a couple of months ago with one girl and the boy.  I think what's happening here is that they smell something (urine) in the plastic.  The boxes need to be clean so you may want to wash it completely with a mild solution of something like an enzyme cleaner or mix it in with dish soap when you wash the box and mat.  It seems to work for me and I wash all the boxes every week and sooner if one of them starts scratching the side of the box.  Hope this helps.  Oh, and on the crystal thing, those pieces are hard and I tried crushing them with power tools to no avail.  I finally gave up because it roughed up their paws and went back to softer litter.  If you're worried about odor, there's some really good ones that have carbon to absorb the odor.  Hope this helps

  6. my cats will scratch on my hard wood floors and there is nothing there, not sure why they do it.
