Question:

Does it irk anyone else that the spellcheck for Y/A highlights Adoptee & wants to change it to Adopter?

I find this to be annoying. Anyone else? Why is Adoptee a misspelling? Why is Adopter in their list but not Adoptee?

(Yes, I am aware that Y/A's spellchecker is rather primitive and most certainly incomplete but it seems that the word Adoptee is more widely used and should have been included!)

ETA: Y/A just suggested that I post this in the "Sports: Hockey Section"!! Lol!

  1. Drives me nuts!!

But once again - the adoptee has no say in things - so I doubt it will get fixed anytime soon.

It's probably not 'proper adoption language' - like those agencies & agency trolls like to tell us.

    They have the money.

    We don't.

Now - who do you think has the power in this situation???

  2. i also find it annoying that my own spell check always wants to change it to adaptee...which i think is fitting...

but I don't know why it's not recognized. it's annoying.

  3. Yes, it drives me insane! (Not a long drive some days though)

  4. Y!A's spellchecker isn't the only one that does this.  I've seen this in some versions of Microsoft Word as well as other applications.

I'm actually one of those folks who doesn't prefer the word adoptee, anyway, so I don't use it often.  I find referring to myself as a person or citizen who happens to be adopted as more empowering.  That's just my own quirk, though, and I realize I'm in the minority with that one.

  5. Yes, that bugs the heck out of me.

  6. I get the same problems it has no clue what section and some of the words are in my dictionary but not on here. it can be quite obnoxious. lol

  7. MamaKate,

    LOL!

I just 'asked' this as part of my answer to another question after having the word "adoptee" -- which I was using to describe myself, as usual -- flagged.  I'm so glad you asked this!  I was curious, too, and was thinking about posting this question myself.

It seems logical, in even the most primitive 'logic', that if any word exists in this form: verb-'er' (or verb-'or'), then it would also exist in this form: verb-'ee'.  Right?

Anyway, thanks for asking.  I'm glad to know I'm not the only one bothered by this.  :-)

    Take care!

  8. Its bothersome but I get irked more when I watch my telenovelas on Univision and the subtitles misspell words. I don't like wasting my time looking up words that don't exist.

  9. One would think that as many times that someone has mentioned this fact it would have been resolved by now.

And the new spellchecker is worse then the previous.
