  1. we do it.... along with a good feed..... then the leaves come back and stay quite pretty until frost..... rather than slowly turning brown over the end of summer and all fall..... looking pretty ratty.... or having the bed be empty after cutting back once they were all browned.... as long as they get a good feed, the next year's bloom is not compromised.......

  2. I never mow down my daylilies.

I live in Zone 7, where winter temperatures get about 5 degrees at the coldest.  The "collapsed" foilage protects and mulches the daylily "bulbs" over the winter.

There isn't any advantage or disadvantage to mowing down daylilies.  They're tough, and they'll return next year.  Perhaps she doesn't like the look of dead foilage; after they bloom, daylily foilage can turn brown and get messy.

  3. I live in zone 6 I always leave the tops on to help protect the rhizomes/bulbs in the winter and then remove them in the spring when the new growth is about 6" tall.  That is the best time to divide the plants as well.

  4. Normally you cut them back in the autumn.  However, unless you have very light soil, day lilies spread like mad.  Chopping them back early helps to keep them in check.
