Question:

Does it make sense to have religions when every person is naturally unique and has their own personal beliefs?

I was just thinking, wouldn't it be a more culturally stable world if massive religious groups like Hinduism, Christianity, etc. just ceased to exist (hypothetically), or would this just create isolation for many people because in actual fact, religion is key to the stabilisation of civilisations?

  1. I'm sure there are other ways, there has to be; it would just take time to sort out if that was the case.

  2. A lot of religion is about community.  Some accomplish this better or worse than others do, but still, a main goal of organized religion is to bring people together for common reasons.

  3. Right, because 6 billion religions is so much more stable than 5.  <sarcasm>

    Leave it alone.

  4. You are making one very flawed assumption: that being that God doesn't exist.

    Colossians 1:16

For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him.

We don't create God in our own image. He created us in His image.

  5. You're begging the question that all religions want all people to think alike.  They don't.

I've been to some radical fundamentalist churches that kind of preach that, but the Catholic Church doesn't.

There are basic grounding beliefs we all share, but that doesn't mean our individuality gets erased for the sake of some kind of forced unity.

What unites God's Church isn't doctrine that everybody has to agree with.  What's unites the Church is the Holy Spirit, which not only celebrates everybody's individuality, but calls us to be individuals that all together -- with our uniqueness intact -- to be the Body of Christ on earth.

  6. In Answer to to your Question :

    NOT AT ALL.

  7. the world would be more stable and peaceful without religion

naturally no one would be starting wars or oppressing/segregating society based on who has the more powerful imaginary friends

  8. I'm in total agreement with you

Most religious people cant even agree on what they believe.

If they could there would be one central christian religion there wouldnt be so many muslim sects. If they cant even agree among themselves then what chance to do rational people have.

  9. i dont think people or groups of people choose to have a religeon .. it arises from a basic need like you imply .. we are unique but also social creatures that need a higher commonality ..

  10. No, because there's only ONE "Truth". Jesus said "I am the Way, and the TRUTH, and the life. NO ONE comes to the Father BUT THROUGH ME."  No spiritual leader from any other religion has said such a thing.

  11. Yes because the person is not the ultimate. God is.

Nothing stops at the person, but to Him who created the person.

  12. There is only one belief and it's through Christ our Savior

  13. by that logic, using standardized shoe sizes makes no sense because everyone's feet are different.

    Religion is truly one-size-fits-all.

  14. There is no logic in individual uniqueness and faith being linked.

  15. Perhaps you know Plato's concept of the Noble Lie?

    Perhaps you should...

  16. "If God did not exist it would be necessary to invent him"-- Voltaire

even Voltaire recognised there was value in religion. He seems to have felt the problem with organised religion(as opposed to individual spirituallity) was outdated social values/conventions.

He even thought religion gave people something to debate/disagree over. I agree with him, so long as the religious arguments don't get used as an excuse for violence towards other people
