How many of you honestly think it matters how much you weigh to dance? Especially ballet? Does it matter in tap? I weigh alot and I do both tap and ballet. I dance both really good. I got second place at competition for tap solo.

  1. It doesn't matter what your weight is.  Dancers are among the fittest of all athletes, so just by doing dance training, you will be fit.  If you are getting good placing in competitions, you must be doing well.

Weight can be an issue if you are seeking a career professionally, due to some people having an asthetics stereotype. Also, in ballet pas de deux, it is harder for the male dancer to lift his partner if she is on the heavy side.   But many girls go through weight change over their teenage years, and it does settle down eventually.

  2. Honestly, in ballet it matters to the teachers a lot. I'm like underweight and built but my instructor has a problem with my d cup b***s. Like it shouldn't matter how you weigh in ballet. But in performances a lot are with partners that lift.. So maybe that's why. Weight in Tap doesn't matter at all! Just go out there and work it girl!!! :)

  3. nope. as long as you practice & work hard, you'll succeed. cheesy, but true :)

and is that really a question, since you provided us kinda with an answer...?

  4. It doesn't matter at all. I've seen girls who are overweight and they still compete in Pointe solo's and they're having the time of their life.

Don't worry about it at all-be you!

  5. dude! it duzint matter how much you way. being skinny doesnt make you a good dancer. and being a good dancer doesnt make you skinny. when dancing you have to be the biggest you you can be. and i know all of this sounds really really cheezy but itz true. you have to have a passion to dance. if you dont like it you'll never be as good as you can be or as happy

  6. my ballet teacher thinks so when I was over weight he mademe do crunches now I'm under weight so i'll look good in leotards

  7. i used to think it did, and i've always been very skinny.

but i went to a competition this year and i saw several girls who were "thicker" place very highly and did better than i did.

ballet might matter more, just appearances since you're in a leotard and tights and you have to appear graceful, if you know what i mean?

but it wont matter in tap.

  8. i no im a guy and ur probly like ohh man he wont no nethin about dancin but thers nuthin wrong with a few more extra poundage when ur dancin , but if its botherin you try loosin a few pounds

  9. I do not think it matters how much you weigh. It would be a plus if you're skinny, but I know people that maybe aren't the thinnest who are just as good at dance as thin people.

  10. It doesn't matter how much you weigh! As long as you are healthy, you're fine. For tap, no one cares how you weigh. For ballet, most people like slimmer people. But, that doesn't mean heavier set dancers can't do ballet. They're still good.
