  1. Paul T is correct.

    When replacing cotter pins they must be fitted. That tapered cut isn't the final one.

    Cover the taper part with black ink and insert it into the crank arm installed on the spindle then remove it. You'll see where the ink came off from the pin. File away to fit until you can repeat the ink and it all comes off. This means the pin is completely seated.

    not all cotter pins are the same. french cotters are different to English cotters in the taper, Ideally the cotters should interface with the axle forming a tight fit incorrect fitting cotters will come loose over a period of time.

    A competent bicycle mechanic should be able to tell you what cotters will fit.

    Diameters range from 8.5mm to 9.5mm some cotter pins have short flats others long.
