I am a first time buyer so i am really swimming in a lot of unknowns.

Also how does the same principle play out for auto financing?

  1. generally, its more expensive from the dealership for insurance.

For the loan, it would just depend on what type of bank you have.  some of them give you awesome rates, and others don't.  Just watch out for fees and such with the dealership, they like to trick you into paying more.

  2. getting insurance yourself is EASY . . . dont let the dealer make anymore money off of you, you already bought a car from them what more can they ask of you ? ? ? If you visit a website like http://www.COMPAREusINSURANCE.com they make it easy for you to find great rates AND get the insurance the same day !

  3. I would shop for both. Dealers usually get a cut when they arrange financing or insurance, and YOU'RE the one who pas their cut. They say that figures don't lie but that liars sometimes figure. I once had a dealer offer me financing at a lower % than my credit union but when the deals were layed out I wound up with a lower monthly payment for the same number of months from the credit union. The reason? The dealer had a lot if "fees" hidden in their transaction which ultimately drove the payments up. That may not always be the case but it pays to shop around and to remember, "regardless of the quoted interest rate, what is the length of the note and what are the monthly payments"/
