like, do some colleges not accept students from religious schools- like Yeshivas (Jewish religious schools), because they might feel the education there is too low?

  1. Colleges/universities will not discredit you for having attended a public high school. What matters is that you did well, participated in extracurricular activities and are clearly interested in continuing your education.

  2. No, not really.  US colleges and university's take into account the whole package.  The GPA, the SAT score, activities, writing ability in the personal essay, etc. It is impossible for every admissions officer to know the background of every school in the US.  In some places religious schools are superior in other places public schools are.  This is one of the arguments for standardized testing.  Also, once you are admitted and accept their offer, you are tested at their school for placement.  If you score too low  on the Math or English test you might have to take additional coursework. Again, this is standard and commonplace.

The only exception I could see is if you are apply to a local school that has a long history of students from your specific school.

  3. No, it does not matter where you went to high school, they will look at your performance at that school.

Colleges will look at your grades, test scores (such as the SAT or ACT), and extracurricular activities you've been involved in.  If your school is small and has limited extracurriculars, try to get out in the community and involved in activities that interest you.

  4. For the elite schools, the quality of the High School does matter -- and going to a low quality High School can hurt you.  For schools that are not elite, it will probably not make much difference.

Many Catholic, Episcopal and Jewish High Schools have higher standards than public schools, while many Fundamentalist Christian schools do not.  Being at a Yeshiva, in and of itself, should not hurt you.

Public universities will not use religion as a basis for rejecting students.  Neither will any respectable private school.  Schools like Bob Jones or Liberty might, though.
